Goodbye UOSM2033…

Before I learnt Living and Working on the Web I always think I have already familiar with internet skills. It is easy for me to find what I want on the internet and I have a kind of confidence because my parents always come to ask me how to use smartphone or computer. However, when I started to learn this module I found the skills I master are childish and what I face is a huge challenge.

The Greatest Progress For Me

The biggest problem for me is my weak language. I cannot express myself perfectly and sometimes language is inappropriate or causes confusion to the reader.

%e5%b1%8f%e5%b9%95%e5%bf%ab%e7%85%a7-2017-01-08-17-41-55(This is professor’s valuation)

Actually, I felt quite nervous to write a 400-words blog at first. From my self test, it is not hard to see I was very weak at Accessing, managing and evaluating online information and Accessing, managing and evaluating online information. I did not have any idea and creativity when I facing an English blog(I think it is because I am not confident). What is more, as a foreigner, when I search for information and look those colorful and a great many words articles I felt I am reading hieroglyphics and could not pay attention to them.

%e5%b1%8f%e5%b9%95%e5%bf%ab%e7%85%a7-2017-01-08-13-56-11%e5%b1%8f%e5%b9%95%e5%bf%ab%e7%85%a7-2017-01-08-13-57-26

But I am making progress all the time! I started to more and more familiar with skill of searching information. And the post also became clear and creative in the meantime. What is more, I didn’t know blog actually could be visualization. In my blog the posts only have words and I was criticized by professor. But now, although I cannot do it perfectly I think I have already made a progress even make images by myself.

The Development Of My Online Profiles

Because of some reasons, many social medias which are quite popular such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are banned to use in China. Therefore, when I came to UK, these social media is brand new for me and I have to learn how to use them from start. During this period, not only I manage my WordPress blog well, I created many social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I have grown from a Digital Visitors in UK who are only search information on the internet but still use Chinese social media to a Digital Resident.

And there is one topic which impressed me is Topic 3 – It Is important to create online professional profiles. I created Linkedin account two years ago but never manage it. As you can see in my self test, I even thought I was good at manage my online identities before.

%e5%b1%8f%e5%b9%95%e5%bf%ab%e7%85%a7-2017-01-08-19-58-15

So when I finished this topic, I went to Linkedin and tried to make my Linkedin more professional. As you can see, I finished the parts of summary, experience and education.

What UOSM2033 Means To Me

new-piktochart-_836_2d84dfee42e0b1c4700a5dde30206fabab78004c

Living and working on the web is a total different course with others. It breaks the rules and we didn’t have lecture. We have to do our own working online and communicate with peers. I really enjoy this module style and I think the knowledges I learnt never less than other modules which we need to go to lecture. And I think these knowledges I leant will benefit me for life. Next, I hope I can more concerned about some topics of internet though the module immediately to the end. Now I have to say goodbye UOSM2033…

Topic 5 Reflection

This week’s topic is quite interesting for me and actually it is a very important problem for us because doing research for independent learning is what professors are able to teach us. And from Tiffany’s post, I found how important education is. The world even cannot make progress without education. Therefore, open access is absolute a good activity for readers. However, it is unfair for authors in the opposite. If open assess, authors cannot get journals’ subscriptions even have to cover the cost by themselves.

As Tiffany said open access was really an ethical issue and I think there is not definitely right or wrong, all we can do is to find the solution to balance them. At first, I thought only government willing to pay the money for authors, both readers and authors can get happy ending. Afterwards, I found it is impractically. As Nicole, who commented my blog said  many journals’ subscriptions are really expensive and it is hard for government to pay for all of the open access. It seems drop an endless loop again. However, when I read Davina’s post, she gave a very good suggestion which is opening access should be selective and given broadly e.g. Universities, corporations or academics who require for their research. It is a good suggestion but I would like to slightly modify it because I think only open access in those public organizations is not enough. We cannot ensure people who are not part of these organizations do not need to access to do the research. Therefore, I think government should share part of responsibility and people who need to use can reduce the burdens. What is more, public organizations libraries could associate with government pay money to authors and let reading of journal becomes a freely service and provides to people at the named point of positions e.g. libraries.

(I commented Tiffany’s post at the wrong site. Both two comments were posted at Davina’s blog.)

Open Access: Good or Bad?

dd6b9201b24c06298735d575d40ea17c

Traditional publishing model which is printing as a book is so complex because you have to consider the details, color and figure etc. With our life starts to enter the digital era, printing books are replaced by internet books gradually. For us, it is the better way because it is more convenience that we don’t have to go to the library or buy the book anymore. However, I believe there are many people once found references for report but discovered many academic articles need to be paid. As what Stephen Lepitak mentioned in his article, 90% of online content to be held behind paywalls in three years media company survey suggests which means it is possible that we may use any article need to be paid in the future. But actually, open access came up many years ago. And is it good or bad?

From Public Library of Science official site the benefit of opening access are divided by three main parts which are accelerated discovery, public enrichment and improved education. Literally, open access is easy for researchers to read articles without restriction. And public enrichment means much scientific and medical research is paid for with public funds. Open Access allows taxpayers to see the results of their investment.

%e5%b1%8f%e5%b9%95%e5%bf%ab%e7%85%a7-2016-12-11-05-29-35

Here is a example from ‘Open Access Explained!’ video. The man’s wife is in hospital and the man wanted to search on the internet and tried to find out the particular medical treatment but couldn’t get access to the papers. However the doctor neither know the answer of these questions. In this case, how could this man make the treatment decision? And if this man paid the access to the articles but he didn’t know which articles are relevant but there is not return policy. Therefore, probably this man spend a lot of money but don’t find any relevant article. It is unfair to a man who is eager to his wife get better. So I think open access is very important that allows taxpayers to see the results of their investment. From my point of view, the most important advantage is improve education. The lack of access to journals is a commonly cited problem for researchers in low-income countries. People in low-income countries are really struggle to get access, let alone be able to contribute fully or do world-class research. Opening access can provide people in low-income countries with opportunity to participate in the international research community(Adam Geib, 2013). Only in this way the developing countries can develop faster.

However, in open access model, the end users do not need to pay for using which means not only authors have to afford the cost but the large portion of their revenue comes from publication fees also disappear. Authors will lose motivation to research and result in the negative impact on overall quality(Adam Geib, 2013). In my opinion, I think government should afford the cost and contribute the service for people. It is also be responsible with taxpayers.

Reflection of Topic 4

This week’s topic is very interesting that made me want to consider more about it. It is a very popular topic in the present because the relationship between parents and kids is a big problem that every family should face it. Trough my research, I found that it is really a difficult choice for parents because the safety of kids is important which we cannot ignore it and we don’t have second time to save our kids when they encounter risks. In the meantime, we never want to see rebellion of kids as well. Therefore,  communication is particularly important for parents and kids. Parents should teach kids how to protect themselves and tell them variety situations of they probably encounter risks. And I think when parents use gentle way to educate their kids, kids are willing to connect with their parents more as well. I used to be sped on my parents. They checked my cellphone and controlled me. I was so rebellious at that time. But when they didn’t control me anymore, instead, I became tractable gradually.

What’s more, I learnt a lot through my peers’ blog this week. They have different point of views from me which made me have different ideas on ethical issues. Form Hei Lam’s blog, I really enjoyed how Hei Lam explained “panopticon” which is really interesting. From the post, panopticon is a design that makes inmates believe that they could be watched at any moment and anywhere, even when no one was actually watching them. I think this topic is quite relevant to topic 2. We always be cautious when we active online for avoiding some “conscientious” even not anyone are spy on ours at all. And this is what Hei Lam tried to explain.

From Allie’s post, Allie talked about the problem of our personal information security. I think it is a very serious problem in the presents because we leave  a large amount of information online but we don’t know whether will be stolen and used in the illegal way. In China, it did happened. But as Allie said, it is unavoidable.

Overall, I really enjoy this week’s topic!

Topic 4: Should Parents Spy On Their Kids?

_80530880_708ae04b-df13-4a65-abf9-32e5453d9fa8

With the social network spring up among young people, young people prefer share their life and keep their own secrets to avoid their parents know them. However, for children’s security, parents want to monitor their kids which they think it is a effective way to prevent from their children encountering risks or doing bad things. But is it right? Should parents spy on their kids?  According to the National Center

tablet-safety

for Missing and Exploited Children, 1 in 7 kids receive some kind of sexual solicitation online at some point, and over half of those solicited are asked to send a picture of themselves. This statistic proves there’s a very real danger to anyone under the age of 17 on the Internet. And Ryan thinks that it is very irresponsible of any parents who are not monitor what their children use online and make sure their children are stay in safety. The minors are lack of mature and judgment which makes them easy to trust cybercriminals. And cybercriminals use this to cheat their money, personal information even nude photos. We cannot say it is all children’s fault, they just do not have enough experiences and think this world is beautiful. This is also the reason why parents should spy on their children. There were some incidents happened in China. Some young people wanted to suicide and they posted that they wanted to end their lives on the social media even some people lived the process of suiciding. What if their spy on their children? These young people probably save from death.

internet-secure

People who against spy on children is they think children have human rights as well and privacy should be one of them. Adolescents need to separate and individuate. What that means is that they want to have a life of their own, and adolescence is really about preparing them for that(James Lehman,2016). Justin thinks that even if parents spy on their children every online activities, children will find ways around it. Unless imprison children in a room and stop them contact with any others. Children will try various devices to dodge spy by parents. They can use their friends’ phones or computers or public WiFi hotspots or proxies to get around parents’ parental controls and they will never be able to fully control everything child does. If parents just spy on their children all the time, children probably want to rebel and attempt bad things outside their parents’ watch(Justin, 2013). Therefore, it is important that educate children what should do rather than spy on them. It is also parents’ responsibility to explain why they shouldn’t talk to strangers and the dangers on the internet(Zack Whittaker, 2013).

Reflection of Topic 3

I think this week’s topic is really useful for me because online professional profile have already became a trend which we cannot avoid to use after graduation. Before doing this week topic I still thought traditional way of recruiting is the main stream. When I doing the foundation year my teacher used to teach us how to make a perfect resume, and it made me think a good resume is the only way to attacked recruiters. However, when these data about how important of online professional profiles are front of my eyes, I have to say paper CV era is coming to an end. And online professional profiles will become more and more important with the development of internet.

My peers’ posts this week is also gave different ideas which are quite interesting. Especially Tobie used the picture of “Trump” which is the most popular topic this week and  immediately attracted me. And he thinks blogs is a good way to showcase creativity, passion and dedication but only played a small part of recruiting which I am so agree with him. I think the primary cause is there is only small part of people use blogs now. In other words, blog has already out of style.

Harry also did a good blog this week. He break traditional form of blog which is suit what he what to express – clear and concise information should be available at a ‘quick glance’. He used very brief sentences to highlight how to create the online professional profiles. And the advices he gave are very useful.

This week’s topic really let me learnt a lot. Looking forward next week!
